Photo Feature: Christmas in Highland County

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: “Christmas in Highland County is like a scene right out of a Hallmark Christmas movie.” General stores creating beautiful displays in their large, front windows. A community gathering to sing Christmas carols in the town Courtyard as they light their beautifully-decorated Community Christmas Trees. A Holiday Vendor Market where local artists and craftspeople sell their wares – the perfect Christmas present for your cousin who loves lavender products, your friend who enjoys creating new recipes with Maple syrup, or your mother who’s had her eye on that hand-woven basket your neighbor made. The local Girl Scout troops showcasing their Gingerbread Village at the annual Christmas concert presented by the area’s Christmas Choir at the large church in the middle of town.

Breath-taking mountain scenes, cozy homes and cabins, simple country churches, and big red barns that pop out of the white snow blanketing the ground around them.

And, again, I ask: “Hallmark… what are you waiting for?!”

Dorothy Stephenson grew up on her family's cattle operation in Meadowdale, located in the southwest corner of Highland County. When she wasn't on horseback helping her father gather and work cattle, you'd likely find her (still on horseback) jumping creeks in her family's nearby "Big Pasture." Today, though she doesn't ride horses much anymore, she has her own cattle, land, and expansion plans for a farm. Additionally, (and with the inherited, Stephenson, entrepreneurial spirit) she owns two small businesses in Highland County - Sundance Media & Design and Sundance Studio & Productions, which houses another of Dorothy's long-time loves - Clogging. Dorothy loves exploring new places, skills, and ideas, and she intends to live life to the fullest as long as it will let her. (Oh! And she LOVES Christmas!)
